. Prenatal ultrasound reveals an infant with an enlarged and expansion of both lateral ventricles. What is this condition called and what might have caused it?
The condition in which ventricles gets enlarged with expansion are called ventriculomegaly and medical complication of ventriculomegaly is hydrocephalus. Ventriculomegaly is when the fluid filled structures (ventricles) in brain gets to large and prenatal ultrasound reveals about enlarges ventricles if their size is more than 10mm.
There are many factors can cause ventriculomegaly
1. Defect in brain development
2. Damage or loss of brain tissue
3. Hydrocephalus- disease in which reabsorption of CSF is prevented.
4. Self-limiting imbalance in fluid circulation may impaired reabsorption.
5. Congenital malformation of interventricular foramen
6. Obstruction due to infection, hemorrhage or tumor.
Usually enlarged ventrivles asscoited with heart disease, malformation of corpus callosum and neural tube defect etc.
