How could a parent use operant conditioning to motivate their 9th grade child to move from a “c” student to an “A”. In your response please provide examples using positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. (Your response should be approximately 30-50 words for each of the four responses)

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Positive reinforcement-Parents can have an area to display good grades on papers and projects so everyone can offer praise. A slight increase in marks can be displayed so that others can see and appreciate which will motivate the child to score higher and reach A level. Also if the child is told that they would earn higher pocket money on every A he gets would motivate him to work harder.
  • Negative reinforcement- If the parents keep complaining about low grades then eventually in order to avoid and stop parents complaining the child would work hard to achieve good marks.
  • Punishment-If the parent stops the child from going out and wasting time watching television or takes away his music system which the child loves, the child would eventually work hard to get good grades so that he could get back what he loves.
  • With reinforcement, adding or taking away something is meant to increase the behavior. With punishment, adding or taking away something is meant to decrease or weaken the behavior.
