Marcus has been using a spear and physics to determine how the refraction of light in water will change and how this will affect the fishing process.  If the producers of the show diabolically decide to provide marcus with a laser spear, will his fishing strategy change? What part of the fish should he aim at to amke a hit? Explain how the laster spear will act in comparison to the regular spear.

Solutions

Expert Solution

this is the case of the refraction of light and real and aparant depth. when light passes through one medium to another medium, its direction changes or bends. when the light passes through denser medium to rare medium ( eg. water to air), the light bends away to the normal and when the light passes through the rare medium to denser medium, the light bends toward the normal. this is the reason of aparant depth.

now, when the light from fish leaves the water it bends towards the normal and it looks like the fish appear to be nearer the surface. thats why if the fisherman aims the center of the fish from the spear it will miss the hit. But if fisherman aims the tail of the fish it will hit the fish.

in the case of laser light, if the laser light passes through the air to the water, the light bends toward the normal and hence the fish apper below the exact positon.

The Quest For Perpetual Motion It has been a tenet of physics that it is not possible to build a perpetual motion machine in a closed or isolated system. This fact has not stopped people from claiming to build such a machine. Explain why a perpetual motion machine violates the principles of thermodynamics. Do some research and provide an example of a supposed perpetual motion machine. Explain the machine in detail and why it does not exhibit perpetual motion.
