Describe an incident in which some one defined you as a deviant by others who had greater social power.
This is incident when I was in college second year. I am a white American. I had fallen in love with an African-American girl.
One day we both were spending some time together in a restaurant. Unfortunately, my uncle John (who is a big businessman and quite influential in our society) also visited that restaurant at the same time. This was mere a coincidence.
The very next day he was at my home. He started to complain against me with my father and mother quoting that this behavior is not acceptable as per our race. It is a strongly deviant behavior.
Did the incident involve race, class and gender?
This incident involves race as explained above.
How did this incident illustrates the importance of power in the process of defining what is and is not deviant?
As per law, we all Americans are equal irrespective of our race. But unfortunately those who are socially powerful and influential define the deviant behavior.
For example, as explained above, my uncle John complaint my parents and suggested that this is a strong deviant behavior.
Those who are powerful try to manipulate others on the basis of their ideologies and influence. This is not right.
