When Lincoln was elected, many of the southern states marked they no longer wanted to be part of the US beause they felt they had every right to depart starting with South Carolina, eleven states would eventually the United States and form a new country named the Confederate States of America. Abraham Lincoln said they did not have the right to leave the US and sent army. And This is how, The Civil War had begun.

Yes, the war could have been prevented by compromise. The lack of an ability to compromise led the Civil War in America. If the North should have compromised with the South over slavery, the war could have been prevented.
The Civil War was certainly the most disastrous event in American history. After the war, the US truely was united. The War ended the discussion over slavery that had divided North and South.
