Expert Solution

An organization structure is a system that provides a framework for launching and implementing the project within a parent organization

There are 3 types of organizational structures, they are the following:

A. Functional Structure: In this structure, the employees are grouped into hierarchical specialization. Which are managed through clear lines of authority and report ultimately to the person at the top.

B. Projectized: Here the entire organization is designed to support the project or product team. for example, if a company produces 3 products, i.e product A, B, and C, there will be a separate division for each product

C. Matrix
A Matrix organization structure is a type of an organization which takes the best features of both Functional and Projectized structure
It is a grid-like organization structure that allows a firm to address multiple business dimensions using the multiply command structure. There will be 2 chains of command i.e one for functional lines (vertical) another for project line (horizontal). These structures are designed to optimally utilize supplies by having individual work on multiple projects as well as being capable of performing normal functional duties.

Considering the school's scenario, which seems more as a project-based matrix structure

Project-based matrix structure:

This type of matrix structure has more common characteristics of projectized organization. Most of the authorities and power lies within the project manager
the project manager controls when and what specialists do and is the ultimate decision-maker on project matters

the Matrix structure is a tool to identify the skills and talents of the students and to maintain a balance.

Reporting can be done either upwards to the leaders or sideways to the peers and fellow mates.

Under this system, the students can be directed to where they are most needed and where they add the most value.

It maximizes the use of individual skills, on the other hand minimize the burden of leaders.

It provides a high degree of operational freedom. Flexible to both leaders and students, thus it can respond effectively to changes in technology and other factors

A high degree of coordination is maintained between both.

It seeks to optimize utilization of resources. greater focus on end results

Professional identity is maintained. It brings together diverse specialized skills required to complete a project. It motivates individuals engaged in the project.

It improves the communication and coordination between lead and functional groups. the flow of communication both horizontal and vertical.

Thus taking all these factors we can justify the use of matrix organizational structure as the best for the project. ie school tour which has elements other than sports (history and biology)
