Basic assumptions are given below,

• Maladaptive behavior results from irrational or distorted way of thinking.
• Emphasis on here and now
• Internal mental processes such as thinking, resoning, memory and problem solving are the vital features which influence human behavior.

Causes

• Dysfunctional thoughts, these are the unrealistic and exaggerated thoughts that often outside of the person's conscious awareness.
• Maladaptive coping skills, cognitions, emotions and behaviors.

Humanistic counselling steps

Humanistic theories include client centred, gestalt and existentional therapies.

Some techniques using are asking questions, role playing, confrontation, dream working etc

Steps of person centered therapy

• The therapist is congruent with the patient
• The therapist provides the client with unconditional positive regard
• The therapist shows an empathetic understanding to the client
• Help the client to become a fully functioning person by self realisation

For example, a client with low self esteem can be treated by using this therapy. Make the client to focus on the present and to make them to know about real themselves or inner self. Therapist should provide positive words. Ultimately client can identify his illogical thoughts and use his full ability to move forward.
