Seven located in cervical region , twelve in thoracic region, five in lumbar region, five to the remaining vertebrae fused to sacrum and remaining four forms coccygeal vertebrae.
In the frontal plane the vertebral coloumn busect the trunk when viewed from posterior aspect. Cervical and lumbar region form lordotic curve whereas thoracic region form kyphotic curve..
Now I will explain each region separately:
In cervical region , there are 7 vertebrae . And further divided into upper and lower cervical region . The c1 also called Atlas and c2 also called axis comprises upper cervical region.atlas articulate with occiput superiorly and form atlanto occipital joint and inferiorly articulate with axia to form atlanto axial joint. Now in lower segment the last c7 get articulated with T1. The lordotic changes into kyphotic.
Now in thoracic region , the stability of thoracic is more than cervical and Thoracic joint is less flexible
Lumbar region is capable of movement in flexion , extension, lateral flexion and rotation. Motion depends on how much superior facet of zygophyseal joint faces medially in sagittal plane.
