If an organism has 50 chromosomes, how many chromosomes are in the gametes (sperm or egg cell)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANS. 25

FOE EVRY ORGANISM THE NUMBER OF CHROMOSOMES IN THE GAMETES IS HALF THE NUMBER OF CHROMOSOMES PRESENT IN THE SOMATIC CELLS.

SOMATIC CELLS ARE CELLS PRESENT IN THE BODY OF AN ORGANISM OTHE RTHAN THE GAMETES.

BECAUSE GAMETES ARE FORMED BY MEOTIC DIVISION IN THE REPRODUCTIVE ORGAN. DURING MEOSIS REDUCTION DIVISION OCCURS. DUE TO REDUCTION DIVISION CHROMOSOME NUMBER BECOMES HALF OF THAT OF ACTUAL NUMBER OF CHROMOSOMES. WHEN HALF SET OF CHROMOSOMES ARE PRESENT IN A CELL IT IS TERMED AS HAPLOID.

IT IS A MECHANISM TO MAINTAIN CONSTANT NUMBER OF CHROMOSOMES IN EVERY ORGANISMS GENERATION AFTER GENERATION. DURING FERTILIZATION WHEN TWO HAPLOID GAMETES THAT IS SPERM AND EGG FUSE TOGETHER IT FORMS A DIPLOID ZYGOTE WHICH DEVELOPS IN TO NEW ORGANSISM  . THIS DIPLOID ZYGOTE CONTAINS ACTUAL NUMBER OF CHROMOSOSMES . THROUGH THIS MECHANISM THE CONSISTANCY OF THE NUMBER OF CHROMSOSMES IS MAINTAINED GENERATION AFETR GENERATION.
