A) The total volume of air in Jeffrey’s lungs is 5800 mL. If his IC is 3200 and his RV is 1000, calculate his ERV and FRC.

B) The total volume of air Sally can inhale after a quiet exhalation is 3400 mL. When Sally is sitting still she inhales 400 mL and there is 2200 mL left in her lungs. Calculate or figure out from the information given in the question the following values TV, TLC, IC,   FRC, IRV. ?

C) When at rest Jeremy inspires and expires 600 mL. While his lungs can hold 7000 mL of air only 5500 mL can move in and out, if he really, really tries. Normally, there is 3400 mL of air left in his lungs after a quiet expiration. Calculate or figure out TV, ERV, TLC, IC, FRC, IRV, RV.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Question 1

Given,

total volume of air in lungs=5800 mL

IC = 3200

RV =1000

ERV(Expiratory reserve volume) is the additional volume of air which can be forcibly exhaled after quite inspiration.

Total lung volume = ERV + RV + TV+ IRV

IC = TV + IRV

So ERV = TLV - (RV+IC)

ERV = 5800 - (1000+3200) = 1600 mL

FRC(Functional reaidual capacity) is the volume air remains in lungs after a normal expiration

FRC = ERV + RV

FRC= 1600 + 1000 = 2600 mL

Question 2

Given,

*total volume of air Sally can inhale after a quiet exhalation is 3400 mL --> IC = 3400 mL

*When Sally is sitting still she inhales 400 mL --> Tidal volume(TV) = 400 mL

*At rest, 2200 mL left in her lungs --> FRC = 2200 mL

IRV(Inspiratory reserve volume) is the additional volume of air which can be forcibly inhaled after quite exhalation.

IRV = IC - TV = 3400 - 400 = 3000 mL

TLC(Total lung capacity) is the total volume of air that can be accomodated in the lung after a forcible inhalation.

TLC = FRC+ IC = 2200 + 3400 = 5600 mL

Question 3

* When at rest Jeremy inspires and expires 600 mL --> TV=600 mL

* his lungs can hold 7000 mL of air --> TLC = 7000 mL

* only 5500 mL can move in and out, if he really, really tries --> VC = 5500 mL

* Normally, there is 3400 mL of air left in his lungs after a quiet expiration --> FRC= 3400 mL

*RV = TLC - VC = 7000-5500 = 1500 mL

* ERV = FRC - RV = 3400 - 1500 = 1900 mL

* IC = VC - ERV = 5500 - 1900 = 3600 mL

* IRV = IC - TV = 3600 - 600 = 3000 mL
