A volume of 1.5 L of air at 36°C is expelled from the lungs into cold surroundings at 6.4°C. What volume does the expelled air occupy at this temperature? The pressure and the number of gas particles do not change.
We know at constant pressure and number of moles
V1 / T1 = V2 / T2 -----(1)
T1 = 36 oC = (36 + 273) K = 309 K , V1 = 1.5 L
T2 = 6.4 oC = (6.4 + 273)K = 279.4 K
From (1) V2 = V1 * T2 / T1 = 1.5 L * 279.4 K / 309 K = 1.356 L
Volume expelled air at 6.4 oC = 1.356 L ~ 1.36 L
