  • Identity refers to what makes us unique as an individual. It refers to our personality, beliefs, attitudes, expressions which define who we are.People who are part of our life, including our family and friends, form a part of our identity and our existence. It is our individuality in the world.
  • We indirectly acquire our identities from our parents, our peers and even our roles models. Our identity dictates our choices and decisions, providing a sense of purpose and defining who we are and what we value in our lives. For instance,I am a psychologist, and I value helping and guiding people, resolving problems of others is my purpose in life. This defines me as person, who values being there for others.
  • My identity is that I am a woman,a daughter,a psychologist,an Indian and a friend. Each role defines different sides of my personality and things which hold meaning in my life, for which I am living.
  • Lack of coherent sense of identity, will lead to people experiencing uncertainity and confusion about their purpose in life, and may resort to unethical behaviours out of frustration.Identity formation is all about finding yourself by matching your talents and potentials to the social roles available. When that doesnt happen people adopt dark identities and may engage in risky behaviours, like drug abuse, violence, compulsive behaviours etc.
  • The ultimate goal of identity formation is to find and nurture your choices which are consistent with your true self and not deny it.Accepting your true self is the first step towards developing your identity.
