Explain how you could do a level control loop, by making use of the FEED FORWARD philosophy

Solutions

Expert Solution

Feed forward control acts whenever a disturbance occurs in and it responds without a delay or or wait for a change or deviation in process variable, and it normally used in combination with feedback control The basic concept or philosophy the feedback control is to measure important disturbances and take rectifying action before they upset the process.

Let us consider an example the Feed forward control of the liquid level in boiler drum is  shown in figure below as the question is asked regarding the level control loop, and so for better understanding about the same.

In case of conventional feedback control system as we know the level of the boiling liquid is measured and used to adjust  feedwater  flow rate, but the fact is that this control system is very sensitive to rapid changes in the disturbance variable , flow rate of steam because of the small liquid capacity of the boiler drum, and it results in rapid disturbance changes because of demands by other processing units.

The feed forward control scheme can provide better control of the liquid level by means of measuring steam flowrate and adjusting the feedwater flow rate by feed forward controller as shown in figure above. The feedforward controller on measuring the disturbance, produces it's control action depending on it..

please note that in practical applications the feedforward control is normally used in association with feedback control.

1 - Is PID control used in Feed Forward or Feed Back control? 2 - We have a controller, and every time the Operator changes the Set Point, the controller responds, and gets the process sorted out. Now, somewhere, we have read that load disturbances needed to be considered in processes, as well. How will this controller react, if there is a load disturbance, and not a Set Point change?
