16.29 calculate [H+] for each of the following solution and indicate whether the solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.(b) [OH-]= 8.8 * 10-9 M; (c) a solution in which [OH-] is 100 times greater than [H+] SHOW ALL WORK

Solutions

Expert Solution

b. [OH-]= 8.8 * 10-9 M

   Kw   = [H^+][OH^-]

   [H^+]   = Kw/[OH^-]

               = 1*10^-14/8.8*10^-9    = 1.136*10^-6M

[H^+] >1*10^-7 It is acidic solution.

b. a solution in which [OH-] is 100 times greater than [H+]

        [OH^-] = 100[H^+]

     Kw   = [H^+][OH^-]

   1*10^-14 = [H^+]*100[H^+]

   1*10^-14/100    = [H^+][H^+]

        [H^+]^2        = 1*10^-16

        [H^+]         = 1*10^-8 M

        [OH^-]    = Kw/[H^+]

       [OH^-]   = 1*10^-14/1.*10^-8

        [OH^-]   = 1*10^-6M

    basic solution
