1. If in forming an allopolyploid the pollen of one diploid species fertilizes a plant of another diploid species would you consider this plant monoploid or diploid? What is N? What is X?
B. What needs to happen for their progeny to be fertile? Why?
C. Describe how you could make this a reproductively viable plant.
1)
The two parents which produce this allopolyploid are diploid in nature. Because the diploid individual produces the haploid gametes by the process of meiosis. There is found homologous chromosome and carry out process in normal manner.
N is the haploid content in the cell. This is defined as the half content of genome in the cell.
X is the monoploid number. This is the base chromosome number.
B) Their progenies are non fertile. They are sterile in nature. Because they have single set of chromosome for two species. The proper alignment will not occur in metaphase. There are chances of non disjunction during the anaphase 1 of meiosis. Hence produced non viable gametes. The fusion of such gametes produces inviable offspring.
C) This F1 progeny are treated with Colchicine. This leads to make the double chromosome number in the cell by inhibiting the microtubule function. In this way, there are double chromosome found in the cell. Hence, these offsprings when undergoes gamete formation, then there is found viable gamete. The fusion fo viable gametes produces viable zygote.
