1. An investigator has developed a new fertilizer for a certain species of plant. They are interested in determining if the fertilizer has an effect on the height (inches) of the plants. They conduct an experiment where a random sample of 15 plants are given the fertilizer and 15 random plants are given water to serve as a control.

Using Minitab,

a. Evaluate the normality assumption.

b. Test the hypothesis that the two population variances are equal.

c. Calculate the value of the test statistic for part b using the formula from class, does this match the value computed by Minitab?

d. Produce a 95% confidence interval for the difference in means.

e. Provide an interpretation of the confidence interval produces in part d.

f. Conduct a hypothesis test to examine the investigator's primary question of interest.

g. Now calculate the value of the test statistics for part f, does this match the value computed by Minitab.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Part a.

Using Minitab:

  • Go to Start menu and then move to Basic Statistics.
  • Click on Normality Test and then enter the variables on the respective columns.
  • Click Ok. After clicking OK, Minitab generates the probability plot in a separate window.

Here we can notice that since the P value is greater than .05, we can assume the “Fertilizer” and “Water” data is normal.

Part b.

To check whether the variances of two populations of interest are statistically significant different, we use the test of equal variance.

Null Hypothesis (H0): σ21 = σ22

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): σ21 ≠ σ22

  • Click Basic Statistics → 2 Variances.
  • A new window named “Two-Sample Variance” pops up.
  • Click in the blank box of “Samples” , enter respective samples as shown in below figure.

Click “Options” and select
“Use test and confidence intervals based on normal distribution”

Part c.

Calculations using Formual:

Test statistic for equal variance F=

value of the test statistic for part b using the formula is match the value computed by Minitab.

Part d.

Questions 1 You are the principle investigator of a research unit in the Botany and Plant Biotechnology department that studies medicinal plant usage in South Africa. Your work focused extensively on devil’s claw. You have identified that one of the plant extracts, harpagoside that is an iridoid glycoside, is of medicinal use. You would like to produce this iridoid glycoside in a liquid culture of Escherichia coli at commercial scale. You have identified that the key enzyme that you would...

Given the warming climate, you are interested in how seed production of a certain plant species if affected by temperature. In particular, you are interested in whether seed production shows a plastic response to temperature, and, if so, whether there is the possibility for adaptive evolution of phenotypic plasticity in response to climate change. Please describe the steps that would be needed to demonstrate there is the capacity for adaptive evolution in the population you are studying.

A botanist has developed a new hybrid cotton plant that can withstand insects better than other cotton plants. However, there is some concern about the germination of seeds from the new plant. To estimate the probability that a seed from the new plant will germinate, a random sample of 3000 seeds was planted in warm, moist soil. Of these seeds, 2060 germinated. (a) Use relative frequencies to estimate the probability that a seed will germinate. What is your estimate? (Enter...
