A space station is about to disintegrate. There is room for one person in an escape pod which will preserve that person’s life until a rescue vehicle can arrive. There are three persons left on the station: a 20 year old student (that is you), a 50 year old scientist and a young child. Who should be given the space in the escape pod, or should the three draw lots and decide randomly?

Two astronauts are on a space station preparing for a mission to Mars. The space station is powered by the combustion of a mixture of gases released from the high pressure container in which they are both contained. When not in use, the high pressure gas canister is stored in the far corner of the station away from the crew. One of the two gases possesses a high molecular weight, has a strong foul odor but is harmless to humans...

Your spaceship has docked at a space station above Mars. The temperature inside the space station is a carefully controlled 24 ∘C at a pressure of 735 mmHg . A balloon with a volume of 515 mL drifts into the airlock where the temperature is -83 ∘C and the pressure is 0.120 atm . What is the final volume, in milliliters, of the balloon if n remains constant and the balloon is very elastic?

A space station is located in a gravity-free region of space. It consists of a large diameter, hollow thin-walled cylinder which is rotating freely about its axis. It is spinning at a speed such that the apparent gravity on the inner surface is the same as that on earth. The cylinder is of radius r and mass M. (a) What is the minimum total work which had to be done to get the cylinder spinning up to speed. (b) Radial...

A space station is approximately a ring of radius,R, and mass m, which rotates about its symmetry axis with angular velocity,~ω=ω0ˆe3. A meteor is traveling with momentum,~p, that is parallel to the original ˆe3, and strikes the space station at a point on the rim, transferring the entire momentum to the space station (an inelastic collision where the meteor sticks to the space station). Further, though the meteor has significant momentum,it is of very small mass so that the moment of...

Consider an ATM of a bank located at a metro station. Only one person can use the machine, so a queue forms when two or more customers are present. The metro station is limited in size and can hold only five people. When there are more than five people, arriving customers will not enter the queue. Statistics indicates that the average time between arrivals is 30 seconds, whereas the time for service averages 24 seconds. Both times follow exponential distribution....

You are a junior space cadet on an interstellar space station. Your job is to launch a long distance spacecraft. The mass of the spacecraft without any fuel is 1217 kg. This mass is often called dry mass. The rocket engine of the craft can exhaust hot gas at a speed of 2.26 km/s relative to the space craft. How much rocket propellant does the craft need, if you want the craft to reach a final speed of 5.51 km/s...
