Explain why the straight-legged posture provides a relative mechanical advantage to the coyote. Explain your answer by drawing a vector diagram that shows the force experienced by each animal when it standing still. Account for how each animal accommodates the ground reaction force. (Assume that the rat crouches on all four legs when it’s standing still)
Imagine yourself walking outside. It would be natural that your body would be looking for the most efficient way to move forward with less energy consumption. Now imagine walking with your knees bent more than the usual for each step and you would be definitely feeling that mechanical strain onto your muscles. Further walking in that "extra bent knee posture" is only going to take that extra energy from you to walk.
Similarly, Coyote's straight leg posture adds more mechanical advantage when in motion to move faster and efficiently.
Coming to the case of how much force animals should give to move forward when in contact to the ground it all depends on the weight and the points of contact with respect to it's body geometry. Coyote's is body weight is more balanced with the position of it's legs and the body elevation and hence feels quite a bit low pressure to stay put wherelse in a rat in a crouched position will definitely feel the pressure on its muscles to keep its body with the gravitation.
