Use your mechanical engineering skill. Explain in 200 - 250 words why DOE is important for a Mechanical Engineer using an example. In this section, it is not expected you implement DOE in one full example. The idea in that you reflect DOE understanding in a Mechanical field. Feel free to use any source but the answer must be thorough.

Please type, make it easy to understand.

Design of Experiments (DOE)

Design of Experiments (DOE) is a method which can be used for general problem-solving, optimizing product design and improving the manufacturing processes.

Design of experiments (DOE) is an organized, accurate approach to engineering problem-solving that applies assumption, principles and strategies at the data collection phase so as to ensure the generation of valid, justifiable, and supportable engineering conclusions. DOE is carried out under the constraint of a minimum wastage of engineering runs, time, and money. Design of Experiments (DoE) helps to gain an in-depth knowledge of the process by enabling to understand any complex situation

Uses of DOE consist of identifying proper design and detailing, achieving robust designs, generating the mathematical model that will predict the physical system behavior and determining ideal manufacturing processes.

DOE Problem Areas

There are four general engineering problem areas in which DOE may be applied:

  1. Comparison: Engineer is interested to understand that, by changing the single minor factor will affect or change/ improve the whole process or not.
  2. Screening/Characterizing: Engineer is interested in the understanding the factors which will affect the process which are ranked from important to unimportant.
  3. Modeling: In this case, engineer is interested in modelling of process which will predict the results within the acceptable accuracy.
  4. Optimization: Engineer is interested to achieve optimal way or setting of factors which will affect the process. By using DOE it is possible to achieve fully optimized process

Full Factorial, Fractional Factorial and Taguchi approaches are the models for DOE which are available.

SAS, MiniTab are the statistical analysis and data visualizations oftwares which can be used for DOE.

The narrative summary should address one of three the following questions: Do you have a clear understanding of what you will write about in the research paper, based on your proposal and the research you have done since then? Has your research helped you to refine your argument, or has it expanded your paper into something larger or more complex than you expected? Do you...
