3 of the functions of an ERP are integration, centralized databases and the need for business process reengineering. What do each of these terms mean to you and why are they so important to the success of and ERP system?
Integration: ERP is an enterprise wide information system that is designed to co-ordinate all the resources, information and activities needed to complete the business processes.
Centralized databases: The ERP maintains a common database for variety functions such as manufacturing, supply chain, financials, projects, human resources and Customer Relationship Management.
Need for Business Process Reengineering:The ERP system has to be revised and evolved with changing requirements of business and other external factors.
The are important to the success of an ERP system because:
(i) An integrates system is necessary for streamlining different process and workflows.
(ii) A common database allows easy data sharing among various departments and reduces data storage costs.
(iii) Business Process Reengineering is must for success for an ERP since if the ERP does not suit evolving business needs ,the system does not serve purpose.
