question 1. Which of the following compounds are electrolytes and which are not?

KNO3, H2O, NaHCO3, HBr, NH3

the question 2. write the balanced chemical equation that show the dissociation of the ions in aqueous solution for the electrolytes you identify in question 1. Example: KCl (s) = K + (aq) + Cl - (aq)

question 3. Write balanced equations and balanced net ionic equation for the precipitation reactions:

i) When AgNO3 react with Na2S

ii) When Pb(NO3)2 react with Na2CO3

iii) When Ca(NO3)2 react with NaOH

iv) Fe(NO3)3 reacts with Na2S

Solutions

Expert Solution

Question 1 : The compounds that

Electrolyte : KNO3,NaHCO3

Non-electrolyte :  H2O, HBr, NH3

Question 2 : The dissociation of the ions in aqueous solution for the electrolytes you identify in question 1

KNO3(s) = K + (aq) + NO3- (aq)

NaHCO3 (s) = Na+(aq) + HCO3- (aq)

Question 3 :

Write balanced equations and balanced net ionic equation for the precipitation reactions:

i) When AgNO3 react with Na2S

2 AgNO3 (aq) + Na2S (aq) = Ag2S (s) + 2 NaNO3 (aq)

ii) When Pb(NO3)2 react with Na2CO3

Pb(NO3)2(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) = PbCO3 (s) + 2 NaNO3(s)

Net ionic equation :

Pb+2 + 2NO3- + 2 Na+ + CO32- = PbCO3 (s) + 2Na+ + 2NO3-

iii) When Ca(NO3)2 react with NaOH

Ca(NO3)2(aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) = Ca(OH)2(s) + 2 NaNO3(aq)

Net ionic equation :

Ca+2 + 2 NO3- + 2Na+ + 2OH- = Ca(OH)2(s) + 2Na+ + 2NO3-

iv) Fe(NO3)3 reacts with Na2S

2 Fe(NO3)3(aq) + 3 Na2S(aq) = Fe2S3 (S) + 6 NaNO3(aq)

Net ionic equation :

2 Fe+2 + 6 NO3- + 6 Na+ + 3 S-2= Fe2S3(s) + 6 NO3- + 6 Na+
