The Henry's Law constant for CO2 is 3.4 x 10-2 M/atm at 25°C. What pressure of carbon dioxide is needed to maintain a CO2 concentration of 0.10 M in a can of soda?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans. Following Henry’s Law, the concertation of a gas in liquid phase is given by-

                        Cgas = KH x Pgas

            Where, Cgas = concentration of gas in terms of molarity

            KH = Henry’s constant for the gas for specified temperature and liquid.

            Pgas = Pressure of gas

Putting the values in above equation-

            0.10 M = (3.4 x 10-2 M atm-1) x Pgas

            Or, Pgas = 0.10 M / (3.4 x 10-2 M atm-1) = 2.94 atm

Therefore, required pressure of CO2 in the soda can = 2.94 atm
