WIRESHARK - What is the throughput (bytes transferred per unit time) for the TCP connection? Explain how you calculated this value.

This question is based on the trace file tcp-ethereal-trace-1 in in http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/wireshark-labs/wireshark-traces.zip

Thanks in advance!

Throughput Calculation:

  • For calculating the throughput of TCP firstly we must know that it is wholly dependent on the selection of the averaging time period. For basically computing the throughput of TCP we will select the average time period of the whole connection time that can be seen in the attached traces.
  • After which we will average the throughput for the TCP connection which will be calculated as the ratio of total amount data by the total transmission time of the packet and hence, the total amount of data that is transmitted now can be easily calculated by the difference between the sequence number of the first TCP segment and the acknowledged sequence number of last ACK segment.
  • If you will see in the file that will give us the total data as 164091 -1 = 164090. Now, the whole transmission time will be the difference in the time instant of the first TCP segment and similarly the time instant of the last ACK segment, which will give us the total transmission time.
  • Hence, the total transmission time will be 5.455830 - 0.026477 = 5.4294 sec.

Hence, the total throughput for the TCP connection given will be 164090/5.4294 which is equal to 30.22 KB//sec.
