Choose one of the radioisotopes from the list or find a radioisotope that is not on the list but interests you.
Using your book and Internet resources, find five interesting pieces of information on the radioisotope you selected. Suggested pieces of information may include:
1. How is the radioisotope formed in nature (type of decay)?
2. Risks associated with the radioisotope
3. Number of subatomic nucleons present
4. Stability of the radioisotope
5. How this radioisotope is used.
6. Is the radioisotope used as a medical tracer? If yes, for what body part or process? Briefly explain.
(These are just a few suggestions. See if you can find other interesting facts.)
-Radioisotopes (half-life indicated)
-Molybdenum-99 (66 h)
-Technetium-99m (6 h)
-Bismuth-213 (46 min)
-Chromium-51 (28 d)
-Cobalt-60 (10.5 mth)
-Copper-64 (13 h
-Dysprosium-165 (2 h
-Erbium-169 (9.4 d)
1) Iodine -125
How is the radioisotope formed in nature (type of decay)?
The isotope is formed from xenone-124
Risks associated with the radioisotope Number of subatomic nucleons present
The I125 gets converted to I126 which is a beta emitter and positron emitter and not good for human body
Stability of the radioisotope How this radioisotope is used.
The half life is 59.4 days
Is the radioisotope used as a medical tracer? If yes, for what body part or process?
It is used in nuclear medicine imaging for studying the body. It is also used in microassays.
2)Palladium-103
How is the radioisotope formed in nature (type of decay)?
Answer: Can be formed from Pd-102 by absorbing a positron
Risks associated with the radioisotope Number of subatomic nucleons present
Stability of the radioisotope How this radioisotope is used.
The half life of isotope is 16.99 days. It is used for cancer treatment
Is the radioisotope used as a medical tracer? If yes, for what body part or process?
Answer : Yes it is used for treatment. It is used for treatment of prostate cancer
3) Xe-133
Prdouced from emission of uranium-235. It is used in imagin organs like lungs etc. It is also used in treatment of certain diseases. Half life is 5.25 days. It should be used with due care as excessive or inappropriate usage of radiations may cause harmful effect. Specifically on pregnant woman.
4) Thallium-201
It undergoes beta decay to give mercury.
It is used in treatmenst related to heart muscles or myocardiac.
Half life is 73.1 hours.
5) Cobal-57
It is used in studying the absorbption of vit-B12.
Half life is 2.21 years.
A high time exposure to radiations may cause damage of White blood cells.
It is obtained from iron isotope.
