You have identified a novel gene that seems to be involved in heart development in flies. Describe a method we discussed this week that might allow you to identify the human homolog of this gene. (Be sure to describe HOW you would use that method.)
Hi,
There are different ways to find the Homologous genes. If you find a novel gene that seems to be involved in heart development in flies we can find its homolog in humans using NCBI database. I will describe two main methods below.
1. If you have the gene name, you can go to HomoloGene database in NCBI. Now search gene name in the query box with Human. For example if the gene name is STAT1, you have to search "STAT1 AND Human" in the search box. It will search the homologous gene for STAT1 in Humans. This will show the homolog gene we are looking for.
2. If you have the sequence of gene, you can go to NCBI Blast tool. Select BLASTN if you have nucleotide sequence. Select BLASTP if you have protein sequence. Then paste the sequence of the novel gene in the query box. Now enter Human in the "Organism of interest box". Click on BLAST. This will match the sequence of gene with the sequences from the Humans to show the most similar gene in Humans.
