Tsingtao Brewery’s interesting history has seen it change hands multiple times in its century of existence. It was founded in Hong Kong as the Anglo-German Brewery Co. Ltd. During World War 1 and under Japanese occupation, Tsingtao was acquired by Dai-Nippon (which would later split into Asahi and Sapporo).

After Japanese surrender and withdrawal, the brewery was acquired by the Tsui family and watched over by the Chinese government. In 1949, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Tsui family’s shares were confiscated and the brewery became property of the Chinese government.

In the early 1990’s Tsingtao was privatized. Tsingtao Brewery Group remain the largest shareholders to this day.

Tsingtao has a clear, pale yellow color and a slightly hoppy smell. Its watery flavor and light, non-threatening consistency makes it fairly drinkable regardless of your flavor palate. It is pleasant to drink, although it does little to stand out from the plethora of similar style beers.

Tsingtao would be pleasant on a hot, humid day. Because it doesn’t have a powerful flavor profile, it suits most occasions.

While I absolutely would drink Tsingtao again, I most likely wouldn’t seek it out.
