Suggest why it is difficult to measure the enthalpy change directly when an anhydrous salt is converted to a hydrated salt.
It is difficult to measure the enthalpy change directly when an anhydrous salt is converted to a hydrated salt because of the following reasons:
We do not know the exact amount of hydration of the salt. Further it is very difficult to know the enthalpy change when a solid converts to another solid. Thus in order to know the actual amount of enthalpy change the solids are dissolved in water and the enthalpy change is observed.
