Henaturia - It is defined as presence of atleast 5 RBC per microliter of urine. Normally blood is not present in urine. At very few instances haematuria can be considered normal.
(Note - Red coloured urine without RBC/Haemoglobin is not haematuria. Cause of red colour urine include - beet root ingestion, blackberry ingestion etc.)
Normal or physiological hematuria can be seen in ;
- Pregnancy (during 2nd or 3rd trimester)
- After heavy exercise
- after fever
Abnormal causes of Haematuria : Can be due to upper or lower urinary tract problem.
A. Upper urinary tract causes of Haematuria :
1. Post infectious - PSGN - Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
2. Alport syndrome
3. IgA nephropathy (Bergers Disease)
4. FSGS
5. Pyelonephritis
6. SLE nephritis
7. HSP nephritis (henoch schollen purpura )
8. Papillary necrosis
9. Acute tubular necrosis (ATN)
10. Nutcracker syndrome
11. Hydronephrosis
12. Polycystic kidney disease
13. Wilms tumor
14. Trauma
B. Lower urinary tract causes of Haematuria :
1. Cystitis
2. Urethritis
3. Urolithiasis
4. Bladder tumor
5. Coagulopathy
