if you were to design a medication for high blood pressure, how would you design it? what systems would you target? how would this drug work on a biochemical level? Could it have multiple targets? what would be the potential side effects? this drug could target somewhere other than the Cardiovascular system.
Drug I would design for treating high blood pressure is diuretics especially a thiazide diuretics. The term "thiazide" refers to drug with similar action like chlorthalidone and metolazone but with thiazide chemical structure. They are designed to synthesize more potent carbonic anhydrase inhibitors as astructural variant of sulfanilamides.
They are designed to treat hypertension and they act on kidney to excrete more water and sodium. They also increase the calcium reabsorption at the distal tubule. The mechanism by which it inhibit sodium and chloride reabsorption by inhibiting sodium–chloride cotransporter, a symporter called as NCC, coded for by SLC12A3, located in the distal tubule. It also exert the vasodilatory effect by activating potassium channe and tehreby lowering the blood pressure. Both hydrochlorothiazide and indapamide are observed to provide the better hypotensive efficacy via combined vasodilator and diuretic effect.
The drug will not have multiple target as it defined only to NCC of distal tubule of nephron which is baasic functional unit of kidney. Therefore it targets a organ other than cardiovascualr system.
It causes sideeffects include:dizziness, appetite loss, blurred vision, stomach upset, itching and head ache.
