  • Gender role or sex role is a social role.
  • There are two types of concept in gender role-  femininity and masculinity
  • While playing this role, people behave according to the acceptance of the society of their sex.
  • For example- A male and a female behave according the other males or females, who belong to his or her society respectively.
  • The development of the gender role is very important area of human development.
  • It affects the whole life of a human being.
  • Labeling oneself as a boy or a girl can begin in early years of the child. According to this label s/he start acting like that.
  • During the first year of their life, their clothing, emotional expression and their toys all get affected by their sex and this is the initial phase of the gender role.
  • After the first year, child start to play and imitate others. They become aware of their gender. they start considering themselves as a boy or a girl.
  • Boys start to observe males and learn the masculinity and girls start to observe females and learn to become feminine.
  • In the middle childhood, the boys get more aggressive and the girls become more dependent.
  • During the adolescents, the boys and girls get fixed with their role identity. Boys become more macho and the girls become more shy and dependent.
  • Like this the development of the gender role continues through their lifespan.
