the basic mechanisms by which enzymes increase the rates of chemical reactions can be classified into four groups. What are they?
1) Facilitation of proximity or propinquity effect - substrates are brought to close proximity at the active site of the enzyme
2) Covalent catalysis - A covalent bond is formed between the substrate and the enzyme (covalent bond is formed between the nucleophilic aminoacid side chain with the electrophilic center of the substrate) thus forming a reaction intermediate.
3) General Acid- Base catalysis - Acid- Base catalysis involves transfer of proton in the transition state
4) Strain, molecular distortion, shape change - strain in th bond of reactant and release of strain as the transition state gives rise to product
