You hypothesize that place cells that fire in sequence are recurrently connected with higher probability than would be expected randomly. Design an experiment to test this. Include all aspects of the experiment, including behavioral paradigm, physiological recording method, and method to determine connectivity between recorded neurons, in your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Place cells are a set of neurons that mainly help in locating goal and navigation. These are seen in primates, rats ,rodents, hippocampus etc..

For our experiment we can take rats as the model organism since it is easy to fix head gears.Make a square around the rat by assuming it as their place field and now keep any food items in there. And keep noteing the firing of the place cells with multuarray electrodes and using microscope to view the activity of place cells physiologically. We can see that the rat will locate the food using the place cells and thus we can find out whether the place cells work with connections.

Hypothesize how your two buffers’ pHs will compare to each other. (Will one be higher than the other? If so, which one?) Explain.  One solution will need 28-32 mL of NaH2PO4 and 18-22 mL Na2HPO4.  The other will need 18-22 mL of NaH2PO4 and 28-32 mL Na2HPO4. Assume you make a buffer with 20 mL KH2PO4 and 30 mL K2HPO4. Both solutions are provided at a concentration of 0.2000 M and are made to a final volume of...

You hypothesize that a group of tolerogenic cells is located in the fetal pancreas. a. What method would you use to identify their location within the tissue? b. What method would you use to quantify their abundance in the whole fetal pancreas based on their surface expression of protein A and Protein B and the absence of protein C?

Animal cells generally have a higher concentration of Na+ outside of the cell than inside the cell and a membrane potential around -70 mV. When an Na+ moves into an animal cell, how does that movement impact the membrane potential? How does that movement impact the Na+ concentration gradient? Explain what an equilibrium potential for an ion is, what the resting membrane potential is, and how they are different.

You own a house that is valued at $500,000. The probability of a house fire in your area is 0.0002, and if a house fire happens, your home’s value will be reduced to $0. You are considering buying an insurance for your house. In case of fire, the insurance company will pay you $300,000. Ignore depreciation, taxes, etc. of your house in the following calculations. What is the expected values of your home without insurance and your home if the...

Problem 3 You hypothesize that people who drive sports cars have faster reaction times than those who drive nonsports cars (e.g., sedans, pickup trucks, etc.). You design a task that measures response time to detect a visual target presented on a screen for 500 ms. The two types of drivers completed 300 trials of the task and the mean reaction times were calculated. The data are shown on the right. Did you find support for your hypothesis? Use the four-step...
