a developing follicle just prior to ovulation is known as?

Solutions

Expert Solution

- A developing ovarian follicle just prior to ovulation is known as tertiary follilce or mature graafian follilce.

- Folliculogenesis is the process of development of ovarian follicle under the influence of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) of anterior pituitary gland.

- The stages of development of ovarian follicle are as follows :- primordial follicle --> primary follicle --> secondary follicle --> tertiary or mature graafian follilce. Graafian follilce ruptures during the process of ovulation and releases secondary occyte midway in the ovarian cycle under the surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) from anterior pituitary gland.

- Graafian follilce ruptures and releases secondary occyte and gets converted into corpus luteum which secretes the hormone progesterone which maintains the uterine endometrial lining in anticipation of pregnancy.

- If fertilization does not happen post ovulation then the corpus luteum degenerates and gets converted into corpus albicans which eventually gets atrophied.

After ovulation, the granulosa cells from the ovulated follicle differentiate into luteal cells. Steroid production by granulosa cells in a developing follicle is different from those forming the corpus luteum because: choose the correct answer secretion of hormones by the luteal cells has negative feedback effects on the hypothalamus and pituitary whereas secretion by the granulosa cells has only positive feedback effects. steroid hormone secretion by the granulosa cells mainly promotes the formation of secretory glands in the endometrium, whereas...

Let’s say there is a gene known as X that is expressed in the developing forebrain and midbrain (located anteriorly), and a gene known as Y that is expressed in the developing hindbrain (located posteriorly). Describe one experiment to confirm that another gene, Z, which encodes a transcription factor, activates the expression of Y but represses the expression of X in the developing hindbrain; be sure to include your expected result.
