A manager's decision-making ability determines the effectiveness
of their leadership. The factors affecting decision making are
grouped into:
Perception Issues
Perception is one's environment interpretation. One's perception
influences how they make decisions and solve problems. Perception
is influenced by the following:
The perceiver-.The Background and experience, Personal values,
Personal expectations and Personal interests of the leader.
The object- Is the person, item, or event impacting on the way it
is perceived. The relationship of objects affects the perception of
the perceiver.
The Situation- Time, location, and other situational factors
influence our perception of an object.
Organizational issues
Organizational issues affecting the decision-making process
include:
Policies and Procedures- These are formalized policies and
procedures developed to resolve common problems and to direct
managers when making decisions.
Hierarchy of the organization – This is the management structure of
the organization. Different levels of management have different
degrees of authority which directly impacts the nature of decisions
one makes.
Organizational Politics –Refers to the behavior displayed by
persons and groups which is aimed to influence others. Individuals
and teams will often use politics advancement of careers,
advancement of interests and ideas and increase rewards.
Organizations have different individuals with different beliefs,
values, and interests. The differences are the driving forces
behind organizational politics.
Environmental issues
These are the external factors that directly or indirectly affect
the organization. These include the market in which the
organization operates, the economy, Government legislation and
Customers' reaction to the organization’s products and
services.
Many factors affecting the decision-making process can lead to
mistakes being made. Leaders are in a better position to avoid
mistakes by having awareness of the types of mistakes that can be
made and knowing the reasons for the mistakes.
