In the inspection of tin plate produced by a continuous electrolytic process, 0.2 imperfection is spotted per minute on average. Find the probabilities of spotting.

(a) one imperfection in 3 minutes.

(b) at least two imperfections in 5 minutes.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:

Given: In the inspection of tin plate produced by a continuous electrolytic process, 0.2 imperfection is spotted per minute on average.

Thus X = Number of imperfection is spotted per minute follows a Poisson distribution with parameter

Part a) P(  spotting one imperfection in 3 minutes) =..............?

That is: P( X = 1) = ............?

We are given 0.2 imperfection is spotted per minute on average. , but we have to find probability of  spotting one imperfection in 3 minutes, so we need to find new parameter per 3 minutes.

For one minute we have , then for 3 minutes we get:

Thus using probability mass function of Poisson distribution we get:

Use excel or scientific calculator to find : e-0.6

Excel command:

=EXP(-0.6)

=0.548812

Thus probability of  spotting one imperfection in 3 minutes is 0.3293

Part b) P( Spotting  at least two imperfections in 5 minutes) =...........?

For one minute

we have , then for 5 minutes we get:

Thus using probability mass function of Poisson distribution we get:

Thus probability of  spotting at least two imperfections in 5 minutes is 0.2642.

Tandy Leather Company manufactures leather gloves. The gloves are produced in a single, continuous process in the Minneapolis Plant. During the process, leathers are sewn, punched, and dyed. The gloves then enter a final finishing stage to conclude the process. Labor and overhead are applied continuously during the manufacturing process. All materials are introduced at the beginning of the process. The firm uses the weighted-average method to calculate its unit costs. Production Data, March 1: Work in process inventory: 400...

Process Costing Tempe Manufacturing Company makes a single product that is produced on a continuous basis in one department. All materials are added at the beginning of production. The total cost per equivalent unit in process in March 2009 was $4.60, consisting of $3.00 for materials and $1.60 for conversion. During the month, 8,700 units of product were transferred to finished goods inventory; on March 31, 2,000 units were in process, 10 percent converted. The company uses weighted average costing....
