Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. (b) Matrix questions Sets of questions in a questionnaire that use the same set of response categories: Matrix questions are very similar to likert scale questions. It uses a standard scale to record answers to different topics. It is basically a multiple type question that is presented in a grid or matrix. One such example is given below:

How would you rate the services?

Bad

Poor

Fair

Good

Excellent

Food Quality

Hygiene/cleanliness

Parking

  1. (c) Independent variable is a variable that does not depend on any other factors and their existence is not affected by any other factor. Dependent variables depend on other factors and a change in that factor can lead to change in dependent variable. Cost of advertising campaign is an example of independent variable because it is not affected and there is no change in the cost unlike other options where increase, rate and frequency is given making them dependent variables.
  2. (b) Open ended questions are the questions in the questionnaire where the respondents are asked to give their own answer based on their knowledge and feeling. The question begins with why, how and are like “Tell me what do you think about...”. This type of question is an effective way to have a meaningful answer.
  3. (d) Unobtrusive method is a way of data collection in which researcher does not enquire directly like in questionnaire and interviews. It is done with mere observation and without the knowledge of respondents. This means it is a challenge of collecting data without the participant being affected by certain external obstructions.
  4. (b) Complete observer is the scenario where the researcher is not involved in the data collection in anyway. He is not seen by the participants, neither noticed. Other three observational roles require participation of researcher in one way or other.

A food-frequency questionnaire is used to measure dietary intake. The respondent specifies the number of servings of various food items they consumed over the previous week. The dietary cholesterol is then quantified for each respondent. The researchers were interested in assessing if there was an association between dietary cholesterol intake and high blood pressure. In a large sample of individuals who had completed the questionnaire, 250 persons with a high dietary cholesterol intake (greater than 300 mg /day) were selected...
