Syphilis

Introduction

Syphilis is sexually transmitted bacteria disease caused by  Treponema pallidum . It spreads from person to person from mucus membrane. This disease generally spreads by sexual activity. It can be transmitted from mother to fetus. Treponema bacterium can remain dormant in the body for a long period of time. If left untreated, syphilis can cause severe damage to nervous system and heart

Symptoms

The different stages of syphilis include primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary

  • In primary stage-a small sore is developed at the site of infection (paenis/v@gina).The of syphilis develops after many weeks. The chancre is painless.
  • In secondary stage-Slowly, the rashes spread over the body including trunk. It can sperad to hand, palm as well as feet.
  • In latent syphilis- If the secondary state is left untreated, rashes spread all over the body. The soresin mouth and genital area can be seen.
  • In tertiary syphilis- the severe infection spreads in nerves, eyes, liver and heart.

Treatment

Drugs used to treat syphilis are

  • Penicillin (V)
  • Tetracycline
  • Doxycycline
  • Clindamycin
  • Cefrtiaxone

Prevention Techniques

  • The disease can be prevented by complete abstinance
  • The use of condoms can be suggested
  • The towels/ napkins and cloths of patient must be properly sanitized.
