- Linda C. is a 25-year-old patient who is being treated for sexually transmitted diseases with sulfadiazine (generic) and doxycycline (Doryx). a. Explain the difference between sulfadiazine (generic) and doxycycline (Doryx). b. What medication instructions should be taught to this patient?
Sulfadiazine(generic):
Sulfadiazine is type of sulfa drugs which is used to treat
infections. It acts in only certain types of infections and can not
be used in viral infections like common cold, flu. And it is
contraindicated in children because of high risk of side effects
unless there is an urgent condition.
Sulfadiazine is available in generic form. Dosage of intake of this
medicine is based on medical condition, weight, and response to
treatment.
Doxycycline (doryx):
Doryx is used to treat bacterial infections. It is a tetracycline
antibiotic. It stops the growth of particular bacteria and cure the
disease. This is effective only in bacterial infections not useful
in viral infections.
Take this medication at least minimum of 2 hours after or before
taking any products which contains aluminnium,calcium, iron,
magnesium, zinc or any diary products , antacids, vitamins etc. to
avoid the improper absorption of this medicine.
Medication instructions to the patient:
• Azithromycin –
Single dose regimen of azithromycin is effective in Sexually
transmitted diseases along with combination of other
antibiotics.
• Erythromycin-
Can be used as a alternative antibiotic in chlamydia, syphilis and
in gonorrhoea.
• Ceftriaxone-
It is a cephalosporin antibiotic used in bacterial infection. It
can be used in sexually transmitted diseases but not much effective
in chlamydia. It is used in combination with azithromycin or with
doxycycline.
