Briefly describe how you would determine whether a given salt will produce an acidic, basic, or
neutral solution when dissolved in water.
Answer:-
1) If the salt produces a strong acid and a strong acid when dissolved in water, the solution is neutal.
For e.g: KCl (salt) +
H2O
KOH (strong base) + HCl (strong acid)
Hence, the solution of KCl in water is neutral.
2) If the salt produces a weak acid and a strong base , the solution is basic in nature.
For e.g :- K2CO3
(salt) + 2 H2O
2 KOH (strong base) + H2CO3 (weak
acid)
Hence, the solution of K2CO3 in water is basic.
3) If the salt produces a strong acid and a weak base , the solution is acidic in nature.
For e.g.:- NH4Cl (salt) +
H2O
NH4OH (weak base) + HCl (strong acid)
Hence, the solution of NH4Cl in water is acidic.
