Helium-oxygen mixtures are used by divers to avoid the bends and are used in medicine to treat some respiratory ailments. What percent (by moles) of He is present in a helium-oxygen mixture having a density of 0.508 g/L at 25 ∘C and 721 mmHg?

Express your answer numerically as a percentage.

Solutions

Expert Solution

PV = nRT

P   = 721/760   = 0.9486atm

R = 0.0821L-atm/mole-K

T = 25+273   = 298K

V =1L

PV = nRT

n      = PV/RT

         = 0.9486*1/0.0821*298    = 0.0387moles

find no of moles of helium using molar masses

0.508   = X*4g/mole of He + (0.0387-X)*32g/mole of O2

X         = 0.026

X    = 0.026 moles of He

He%    = no of moles of He*100/total no of moles

           = 0.0262*100/0.0387   = 67.7%

Deep-sea divers often breathe a mixture of helium and oxygen to avoid the complications of breathing high-pressure nitrogen. At great depths the mix is almost entirely helium, which has the side effect of making the divers' voices sound very odd. Breathing helium doesn't affect the frequency at which the vocal cords vibrate, but it does affect the frequencies of the formants. The text gives the frequencies of the first two formants for an "ee" vowel sound as 270 and 2300...

Divers get “the bends” when bubbles of N2 gas form in their bloodstream if they rise too rapidly from a deep dive. Calculate the solubility (mol L−1) of N2 in water (this is roughly equal to the solubility in blood serum) at sea level and at a depth of 300 ft below the surface of the ocean. It is given that: the density of seawater is 1.01 gcm−3, the density of mercury is 13.6 gcm−3 and the Henry’s constant of...

Which statements are true about helium and heliox mixtures? I. Helium is a gas that is denser than either air or oxygen. II. Heliox decreases the effective flow resistance in patients with upper airway obstruction. III. If you use a flow meter calibrated for oxygen to deliver a 70:30 heliox concentation, the actual flow of heliox will be 1.8 times greater than the indicated flow. IV.
