What are the greatest developmental obstacles African Americans Adolescents face and why?

The obstacles faced by the African American youth are as follows:

  • They face emotional problems in the form of physical symptoms which found more commonly among people of colour
  • They tend to face more somatisation where mental illness bring about physical symptoms
  • During being at risk for crimes of homicides, the African Americans are more likely to be the victims of homicides. Also, as a result of self fulfilling prophecies, they are also at high risk of becoming the perpetrator.
  • There is a huge misinterpretation of behaviors along with misunderstandings that result in tragic consequences. This also leads these minority individuals being placed in the criminal justice system or juvenile system.
  • Also, they receive less help in the mental health system, with lesser access to health care. Also, they would be receiving follow up care on a more frequent basis.
  • These differences and problems are because of the prejudice and stereotype experienced in the history and the discrimination experiences, whose branches though have been cut, roots still remain in some or the other manner.
