What have you learned about the situation of African Americans in the US?
African Americans were brought to the USA in order to work and make America a better place to live. They were the most resilient race who had undergone tortures that cannot be described in words. The uncivilized white society during those days treated as if they were just objects or some kind of animals. This racial superiority mind-set caused the death of innocent Black people who suffered even for their right to live. They worked hard and made America the best place to live but they were not given the rights to live equally until recently. They definitely need an apology from the white world today as the Church did to the scientists once.
Why African Americans who kill white victims are more likely to receive the death penalty than whites who kill blacks?
The white supremacy is still present in the blood of all the white people and some have changed with time and their genetic make-up has started accepting other races but others still hold on to the genes and probably it will take another generation to accepts the fact that no one is superior in this world not even the human race over other species.
There is a common misunderstanding that if one is from the Black community, they will easily commit crime. This is only a stereotyping statement which in most cases is not true.
It could be also seen as taking vengeance or legal racial cleansing where the Blacks are still haunted by the whites who think they are superior.
What did you learn from this movie about the Elaine Tragedy?
100 farmers, who were sharecroppers in the plantations of white landowners, gathered in a Church in Hoop Spur, three miles away from Elaine which is in Philips County as part of the Progressive Farmers Union. Armed guards were stationed outside the church where the meeting was conducted. White people who came to know about it started to make plans to disrupt the meeting. In a mysterious firing three police officers were wounded and military was brought to control the Black people who were considered to be the suspects. Hundreds of Black people were massacred and hundreds of others were kept in stockades.
This incident shows the immaturity and fear of white people who were dominating everyone in the society, including their women. Even the white women had to fight for their rights continuously. Similarly, Black people had to fight for their right to live, work and die as a human being. Many lives were lost in the fight for equality but it hasn’t gone in vain. Today’s generation is enjoying that freedom. Next generation will be more flexible and accept others without any prejudice.
