Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer : Physical activity

Explanation : Energy expenditure is the total amount of energy used by an individual to perform its physical activities. The physical activities also includes the different processes of the body such as digestion, breathing etc.

The energy expenditure mainly depends upon the size and composition of body and also the physical activities done by the body. The age is also a factor affecting energy expenditure, but its role is very less. It has been seen that up to a certain age the energy expenditure in humans increases and at old ages the energy expenditure decreases as decrease in the rate of physical activities.

The diet also affects the energy expenditure, but it also depends upon the energy expenditure amount. When the diet taken is more than the required level as per the energy expenditure of the individual, it results in increase of body size and hence to maintain larger body size, the energy expenditure increases subsequently.

But the body is always performing some kind of physical activities throughout its lifespan. Always during sleeping or awakening we are performing some kind of physical activities in terms of our digestion, breathing or in the form of our work done for livelihood. Also energy is used in these processes although the amount of energy used in different physical activities vary with the type of activities. But the body is always performing some kind of physical activity and hence the physical activity has most profound effect on human energy expenditure.
