What is parental sensitivity? Describe a time when you observed a parent engaged in sensitive parenting with an infant or toddler. Explain how the parent's behavior indicates sensitivity? How did the child respond?
Sensitive parenting refers to parents attending to the needs of the infants by caring, feeding and being with them when they need them. These are the characteristics needed for a parent or a care giver to promote secure attachment because creating a safe and positive environment is one of the key elements of parenting. Being sensitive to the infants would help the children develop trust around the world and a positive worldview. Once we had a family gathering and one of my cousin sisters came with her toddler. Although she seemed to be engaged in conversation with others, she used to turn to the side of the toddler every now and then to ensure that she is safe. When she heard the toddler crying, she attended to it and checked whether the toddler is alright. She moved away in regular time periods in order to feed the toddler. The toddler felt comforted and cared thus, didn’t give any trouble to her. It happily moved around and went to everyone in the family without any fear or hesitation.
