There are different stages in the lifespan of a person. When a
transition takes place from one to another stage, there are
different expectations from the person. These can sometimes lead to
mental illnesses. People in emerging adulthood are at high risks
for the same. There are a few reasons listed for it.
i) People have to go through many transitions in their own life.
They have to cope with changes in identity, personal or
professional roles and relationships. These can result in a
stressful situation.
ii) in this emerging adulthood, people do not have a fully
developed concept of self. They still need to figure about things
about self. They can experience emotional instability and negative
emotions at thing stage.
iii) A person can be faced with new social and family
responsibilities at this age. These can change the goals of a
person. These new situations can cause distress in a person.
Many illnesses are common at this age. Some of them are as
follows.
i) Depression is one of the most common mental disorder in this age
group. In this, a person can experience overwhelming sadness, anger
or melancholy. They can have problems concentrating on their task.
Many young adults commit or attempt suicide due to
depression.
ii) Anxiety disorders are among the most common disorder in young
adults. They can be presented in different forms. Phobia, social
anxiety, panic disorder or a generalized anxiety disorder can be
named a few. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is also one common form
of anxiety disorder. This can occur in young adulthood and disrupt
their life.
iii) An eating disorder is emerging as a common disorder in both
adolescence and adulthood. People can suffer from bulimia or
anorexia. This can cause a series of physical deformity in a
person. This is more common in girls than in boys.
