Emerging Adults experience double the rate of serious mental illness than that of adults over the age of 25. Signs often appear in childhood, worsen in adolescence and become fully manifest during emerging adulthood. Some of the serious mental disorders are:
1. Mood Disorders: Depression, Bipolar Disorder
2. Anxiety Disorders: Panic attacks, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
3. Schizophrenia
choose one of the major mental disorders (listed above), and discuss the reasons why Emerging Adults might manifest a serious mental disorder. What are the signs and symptoms and why is it more likely to show up during this time of life? Emerging Adults might manifest serious mental disorder like; Schizophrenia as this phase of life is characterized by immense stress and anxiety both physiologically and emotionally there the genes of this illness may be triggered to express. This disease usually starts between ages 16 and 30 years. The symptoms include:
Hallucinations. One might hear, see, smell, or feel things no one else does.
Delusions. These are beliefs that seem strange to most people and are easy to prove wrong.
Confused thoughts and speech as the patients have a hard time organizing their thoughts.
Trouble concentrating. People might lose track of what's going on for example; in a TV show as they're watching.
The treatment of Schizophrenia includes giving; Antipsychotic drugs like; Risperidone, which can reduce the anxiety of the patient. Apart from this along with the optimal drug therapy remains the cornerstone; family-based treatments like; reduce the impact of environmental stresses on the biologically vulnerable individual and promoting social functioning. Thus Psychotherapy along with drugs is the right approach to handling this disease.
