As per Erick Erickson's, psychosocial theory Generativity is the 7th stage of development. It is the concern for the future and the next generation. From 40 to 60 or 65 years of age is taken as middle adulthood and the period of generativity.
This is the period when parents take responsibility for their children's education and moral values. It is the period finding our own work and realizing what we have given to society and the community. The adults would nurture positive feelings in the children that would help them accomplish their goals.
During this period generally, people are young and energetic they focus on earning, career, family, and family’s well being. If they are successful in their goal, they have the feeling of achievement that is generativity.
Eric Erickson has compared generativity with stagnation, as per his perspective the person who does not contribute positively for the future generation, society, and community he feels that phase of his life was stagnant and unproductive. If somebody achieves this stage successful he fulfills the virtue of care. Developing a good relationship with the children and life partners are the accomplishments of generativity.
Being generative keeps one healthy because it makes the person remain socially active and social activity helps in keeping good cognitive and physical health. When one keeps good relations with others it helps in having less stress full life. It helps in preventing or delaying the onset of age-related diseases.
That means generativity is contributing positively to the future generation by productive contribution.
