How many possible gamete types can be generated through the process of crossing over alone?
When we are following two genes, this results in four types of gametes that are produced with equal frequency. When genes are on the same chromosome but very far apart, they assort independently due to crossing over
The process of sections breaking and reconnecting onto a different chromosome is called crossing-over. It is the swapping of genetic material that occurs in the germ line. During the formation of egg and sperm cells, also known as meiosis, paired chromosomes from each parent align so that similar DNA sequences from the paired chromosomes cross over one another. Crossing over results in a shuffling of genetic material and is an important cause of the genetic variation seen among offspringoffspring.
