caffeine (C8H10N4O2) pill are mixture and we will be separating caffeine from them. Determine the moles of caffeine in a 1.75 g pill that is 29.33% by mass caffeine. determine % recovery of caffeine if you were able to isolate 33.6 mg of caffeine from the pill??

Solutions

Expert Solution

mass of caffeine in a pill = 1.75*29.33/100 = 0.513 g

moles of caffeine in a pill = w/mwt

mwt = molarmass of caffeine = 194.2 g/mol

               = 0.513/194.2

              = 0.00264 mol

percent recovery of caffeine = mass of caffeine recovered / mass of caffeine in pill*100

                                            = 0.0336/0.513*100

                                            = 6.55%

We are separating a mixture that is 10 mol% methanol, 20 mol% ethanol, 30 mol% n-propanol and 40 mol% n-butanol in a distillation column. The feed is a saturated liquid. We desire to recover 98% of the ethanol in the distillate and 97% of the n-propanol in the bottoms product. The column has a total condenser and a partial reboiler and a feed rate of 100 kmol/hour at 1 atm pressure. The external reflux ratio is 5. In the enriching...

To determine which is the limiting reactant, we compare the ratio of moles of each reactant to the ratio of their coefficients in the balanced equation. Why do we base our choice of which substance is limiting, based on the number of initial moles, and not on its initial mass in grams?

An asymmetric ultrafiltration membrane is used with the aim of separating dyes from a liquid stream and to achieve a more concentrated dye-water mixture. The feed waste stream arrives at a flow rate of 2.2m3.hour-1 with concentration of 1.2 kg.m-3. The membrane’s operating characteristic was calculated from various experiments:                                       where the bulk concentration C has units of kg.m-3 and flux is measured in m3.hour-1.m-2. If two membrane modules, each of area 25 m2, are simply placed in series, give reasonable...

An asymmetric ultrafiltration membrane is used with the aim of separating dyes from a liquid stream and to achieve a more concentrated dye-water mixture. The feed waste stream arrives at a flow rate of 3.0m3.hour-1 with concentration of 0.5 kg.m-3. The aim is to achieve a dye-water concentration leaving the membrane of 20 kg.m-3, so that it can be reused to dye fabric.  Distillation is one of the important unit operations in chemical process. It is a process of separating a component from its liquid mixture, which involves heating and cooling process. There are various types of distillation methods, such as simple distillation, fractional distillation, steam distillation and vacuum distillation. Based on the above description, answer the following questions: Question 1 Identify three (3) factors to be considered in selecting a suitable distillation process. Question 2 Distillation may cause incomplete separation or partial separation of a component in...
