Rationale of azithromycin :
Azithromycin is a broadly used antibiotic (under the class macrolide). The rationale of azithromycin is the pharmacokinetics of azithromycin. It has a long half life and can penetrate phagocytic cells and tissues and transported to the sites of infection by those cells or tissues due to its high concentration in these cells or tissues.
Azithromycin also prevents the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the protein synthesis and the translation of mRNA.
Uses of azithromycin :
Mainly azithromycin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections such as pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, pharyngitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, trachoma caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus etc.
It also used to treat infection of ears, throat, lungs and also sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea infection (Urethritis) etc.
